The Best Breeds for Families

Beagle

Beagles are energetic, curious, and playful. They have a long history, with packs of small pack-hounds noted in the Roman Empire during 55 B.C. Beagles were popular hunting dogs for the English social elites, often running in packs and chasing rabbits. Today they are one of the most popular family dogs due to their friendliness, low grooming needs, and ease of training.

Lab

Labrador Retrievers are incredibly popular dogs due to their friendly and outgoing temperament. They are very active, affectionate dogs and come in three colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. Originating in Newfoundland in the 1800s, Labs were naturally perfect companions to hunters and fishermen due to their retrieving abilities. Today they are often seen as family dogs, as well as guide and rescue dogs. Labs require frequent grooming due to their thick coat, which will shed regularly. They are also very active chewers, so hard toys are a must.

Boston Terriers have a very interesting history, descending from a now extinct breed called “Hooper’s Judge” created in the 1870s. For anyone concerned about shedding, Boston Terriers are the breed for you, as they shed infrequently and require minimal grooming. Regular exercise is a must.

Pug

Friendly and agreeable, the Pug is a spunky little dog that could make an incredible addition to any family. They are an ancient and regal breed, often kept as pets by Chinese Emperors and members of the imperial court. Today they are companion breeds in many homes and known for their small stature and “smushed” face. They require regular grooming and exercise, but are quite easy to train.

Boxer

Hardworking, intelligent, and playful are the perfect words to describe the Boxer. The Boxer as we know it today was introduced in the late 1800s and had a variety of jobs throughout the years. From cattle dog, to police dog, to war dog and guide dog, Boxers have done it all. They are incredibly easy to train, outgoing, and are very low shedders. They are wonderfully
