Training Made Easy: Sitting

Training Made Easy: Sitting

Training is essential to having a long happy life with your puppy. After all, jumping and biting are cute when they’re puppies, but not so nice as an adult dog. This is why it’s important to get your puppy trained.

Sitting is a great first command to teach your dog as it promotes calmness. It’s also one of the most easy commands, only involving three steps.

Step 1: Get your dog’s attention

The first step to teaching your dog any trick is the get his or her attention. This is done through treats like a little meat, cheese, or a PupGrade Multivitamin chew cut into small pieces. Take a small treat and put it in front of your dog’s nose. Make sure the treat is close enough that they smell it, getting them interested, but not close enough to eat.

Step 2: Move the treat

Once you’ve captured the attention of your dog, slowly start moving the treat upwards. Your interested puppy’s face should follow, moving upward. At some point, they will start straining to reach, and hopefully setting their behind down on the ground. Should your dog not automatically sit, gently pushing on their butt is also an option.

Step 3: Reward and repeat

As soon as your pup sits, reward with verbal praise and a treat. Then repeat the process. After successfully repeating (even with a butt push) a couple of times, start introducing the word “sit”. Once your dog begins understanding the cue, you can practice with fewer treats, only providing verbal and physical praise.

As with any training, repetition is the key to forming a habit. Practice with your pup every day and you’re sure to see results!
